2017 NFL Combine: 10 players who helped stock
By John Buhler
This is the draft of the tight ends. People have known about guys like Alabama’s O.J. Howard, Michigan’s Jake Butt, and Virginia Tech’s Bucky Hodges for a while now. Clemson’s Jordan Leggett and Ole Miss’ Evan Engram have begun to pick up steam. Now we have to start paying attention to South Alabama’s Gerald Everett.
Everett had a great scouting combine on top of a good impression left at the Senior Bowl. He ran a solid 4.62 in the 40-yard dash, had 22 reps in the bench press, reached a 37.5 in the vertical, leapt 126.0 inches in the broad jump, and ran a 6.99 in the three-cone.
Overall, Everett is the reason the combine is so important. He played at a mid-major school at South Alabama. The combine helps level the playing field with raw head-to-head competition among his position group. Everett didn’t back down form the challenge and was a top-five tight end throughout the weekend.
One can argue that there will be up to six tight ends going in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft. Everett looks to be somewhere in the fourth to sixth-best tight end range. In other years, he’d be the second best tight end available. This guy could be really good at the next level.
