2017 NFL Draft: Houston Texans: 7-round mock
By John Buhler
Third Round
One player that at one point had first-round talent has fallen ridiculously in the last year. Iowa Hawkeyes cornerback Desmond King won the Jim Thorpe Award for the 2015 Hawkeyes, a team that was undefeated heading into the Big Ten Championship Game against Michigan State.
King was tabbed as a can’t-miss prospect, but has been shamelessly marginalized by the draft process. Scouts don’t like his size and wonder what secondary position he’ll play at the next level: corner or safety?
Well, that shouldn’t matter for a stout defensive football team like Houston. Getting a pure talent and tremendous on-field tactician at King with the No. 89 pick in the third round would be an absolute steal for the Texans.
King probably projects mostly as a free safety at the next level, but could be a great nickel back or dominant as the fourth corner in the dime. His footwork is stupendous. If he plays with a great deal of fight, maybe he can play out on an island or in press man? Regardless, this guy is going to be good and Houston has the culture to get the most out of him.
