8. Coppin State Upsets South Carolina (1997)
The third 15th seed to advance past the first round was Coppin State. They beat the second seed South Carolina Gamecocks 78-65. The display of dominance took everyone by surprise. They dominated the entire game. Behind a 22-point performance from Danny Singletary and 20 points from Antoine Brockington, the Coppin State Eagles had one of the biggest upsets in March Madness history.
This upset wasn’t a complete surprise. South Carolina was not playing too well entering the tournament, despite what their record showed. They did, however, beat Kentucky twice during the regular season. But they were a very inconsistent team, especially with their shooting. South Carolina got ice cold against Coppin State and dug themselves into a hole they couldn’t dig themselves out of.
To this day, this is the only time the Eagles have won in the NCAA Tournament. This is without a doubt the largest blemish on South Carolina’s postseason resume. Eddie Fogler did a lot of great things in his career, but this is could be the biggest loss of his career.
Why isn’t this the biggest upset of his career? Because sadly, the South Carolina Gamecocks would have to relive this horror just a year later. Speaking of the devil…
