Senators, Canadiens will square off in NHL100 Classic outdoor game
Lansdowne Park will be the host of the NHL100 Classic between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.
With the NHL’s 100th anniversary coming up, the league is doing a lot of special things. If there’s something the league does well, it’s celebrating things and outdoor games. The NHL will kill two birds with one stone by having the NHL100 Classic on Dec. 16, 2017. This game will feature the Ottawa Senators hosting the Montreal Canadiens at Lansdowne Park.
"“We believe that at 100 years of age, our game has never been stronger, faster, more skilled or better,” commissioner Gary Bettman said, via NHL.com. “We also believe that the first 100 years are only the beginning. So to launch our next 100 years, we believe it’s only right to bring the Canadiens and Senators back together.”"
Both teams have quite the history, as the two teams were a part of the league’s original teams. Though technically the Senators are just over 20 years old, they were a team before folding in the 1930’s. The date is special because Dec. 19 is the 100th anniversary of the first ever NHL game, which was held in Ottawa.
This is the first time the Senators will host an outdoor game and the second one they’ll participate in. Back in 2014, Ottawa beat the Vancouver Canucks in the Tim Horton’s Heritage Classic in Vancouver. For the Canadiens, this will be their first outdoor game since the 2016 Winter Classic. Montreal beat the host Boston Bruins at Gillette Stadium.

It’s great the NHL will let the Senators and Canadiens face each other in this game. The two sides had one heck of a rivalry in the 1920’s and early 1930’s. Erik Karlsson will lead Ottawa while captain Max Pacioretty and goaltender Carey Price will lead Montreal.
