2017 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars 7-round mock
The Jacksonville Jaguars have to get a tight end at some point this offseason. With Dennis Pitta staying with the Baltimore Ravens, the amount of quality tight ends on the market is minimal at best. They have to replace Julius Thomas, who was one of their top receivers. Evan Engram is someone who could step in immediately and replace him.
He is a dynamic receiver who is remarkably fast for a tight end. Engram ran a 4.42 40-yard dash, the fastest time for a tight end at the NFL combine. He’s certainly not a prototypical tight end, as he stands at just 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, but don’t let his size fool you, he creates mismatches. Engram can handle the workload too, as Ole Miss made him the focal point of their offense.
Jacksonville should be able to utilize him effectively. Ole Miss did and Engram wound up being their best player on offense. He’s a very tough matchup for safeties and linebackers with his speed. Taking on corners is nothing new for him, as the Rebels often used him as a wide receiver. His height and athleticism makes him a difficult guy for corners to cover.
This offense runs optimally when it contains guys like Engram who cause matchup nightmares for defenses. The Jaguars need to add playmakers on offense and they’d be adding potentially the best playmaking tight end here.
