High Value Pitchers

Jameson Taillon – Pittsburgh Pirates ($6400): Taillon has never faced any of the Red Sox hitters and never pitched in Fenway Park before today. But if you really want to separate yourself from the pack with a contrarian play then play Taillon tonight. The weather will be right around 40 degrees, so Taillon gets an advantage there. He is also very tough on right-handed hitters, and the big left-handed bat of David Ortiz is gone. The Red Sox could certainly stomp on Taillon, but I think it makes for a decent play if you want to go contrarian.

Tyler Chatwood – Colorado Rockies ($5900): Chatwood had an outstanding spring and he cut down on the walks that plagued him last year. Whether he can do that in the regular season is yet to be seen, but he looked good with a 19:5 K/BB ratio over 19 innings this spring. His other big downfall last year was simply his home park: Coors Field. Chatwood was excellent away from Denver last year going 8-1 with a 1.69 ERA and he held batters to a .190 batting average. Today he gets the Brewers in Milwaukee and he might make for an excellent value play.

Jharel Cotton – Oakland A’s ($7800): Cotton was very impressive in five starts with Oakland last year allowing just 20 hits over 29.1 innings pitched while striking out 23 and walking just four. He excelled while pitching at home last year with a .47 WHIP and a 1.40 ERA over three starts, holding opposing batters to a .111 batting average in Oakland. He allowed just two hits in his one start against the Angels last year.
