13. Caleb Swanigan, Deonte Burton duel in the Second Round

Iowa State nearly mounted a huge comeback in its Second Round contest with Purdue, but the Big Ten Player of the Year had other ideas.

In one of the more intriguing tactical matchups of the first weekend, Purdue’s huge frontcourt took on Iowa State’s explosive perimeter offense. The Boilermakers crushed the Cyclones on the glass early on, building a lead as large as 19 in the opening stages of second half.

With Swanigan mysteriously on the bench, the Cyclones were able to make things interesting in a hurry. Nine straight points from Burton, including a pair of dunks and 3-point jumper, gave the Cyclones a 73-71 advantage with 3:11 to play.

Purdue responded with a triple of its own to take the lead back, before a layup and steal from Swanigian put the Boilermakers in command. Fittingly, the Boilermakers sealed a 80-76 win on an offensive rebound by Swanigan with ten seconds to go for their first trip to the Sweet 16 in seven years.

Burton piled up 25 points to keep Iowa State in it, but 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists from Swanigan was too much to overcome.
