Dalvin Cook

Running Back, Florida State

The 49ers get very lucky here, as both Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey fell to them in the second round. While Carlos Hyde is a very solid running back, his future is uncertain and they could use a more versatile threat. Between Cook and McCaffrey, the latter might wind up being a better player. However, the former is without question a better fit for the 49ers than the latter. And the former still projects to be a heck of a player.

Cook has experience in a zone offense and has thrived in it. Character issues might push him out of the first round. Expect the 49ers to pounce on him if this happens. He’s also a guy who they could trade up for. Cook makes plays both out of the backfield and as a receiver.

Shanahan will have a lot of fun if he can get the versatile star into his offense. Cook can do damage in so many ways. He’s an excellent runner and he can also run routes remarkably well for a running back. H-backs have been a foundation of the Shanahan offense for well over a decade. With McCaffrey, the offense will have two viable ones in Kyle Juszcyk and Cook.

Hyde would be one heck of a change of pace back for the 49ers. Also, it might be wise to utilize a two back system to save some of the miles on Cook’s legs.
