26. Iago Aspas

A few seasons ago Liverpool had a remarkable season in which they almost took the Premier League title. Although their title charge ultimately fell short, there were many bright parts of that season for the Reds. Unfortunately for Iago Aspas, he was not one of them.

The Spanish striker signed for Liverpool from Celta de Vigo for £9 million in a move that Brendan Rodgers hoped would bolster is attacking options. At first this appeared to be a shrewd move as Aspas had an impressive goalscoring record at Celta. This form didn’t transfer to the Premier League, though, as the former Celta man struggled to adjust to the physicality of the English game.

Like many others before him he showed moments of class but didn’t display it consistently enough. In 14 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, Aspas didn’t even manage to score. His first and only goal for the Anfield side came in an FA Cup tie.

His time on Merseyside was short-lived and he was soon back in Spain in the colors of Sevilla. After a season in the south of Spain Aspas then headed back to Celta where he truly rediscovered his fine form. In this La Liga season the only players who’ve scored more than Aspas are Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s evident that Aspas can play, but he never seized his opportunity while in England.
