4. Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks just finished with a losing record (33-49) for the first time since the 1999-00 season. With few players tied into significant guaranteed money for next season, a retooling may finally be coming.

Picking up Dirk Nowitzki’s option for next season looks like a no-brainer. Any consideration to matching an offer sheet center Nerlens Noel gets this summer would deplete Dallas’ recently projected salary cap room of $34.3 million.

Making a cost-cutting trade or two would open up some financial flexibility. Dwight Powell ($9 million in 2017-19), J.J Barea ($3.9 million) and Devin Harris ($1.339 million guaranteed) are the move obvious potential options to offload. Wesley Matthews ($17.9 million for 2017-18) is also an option to be dangled in a trade, but his injury history and an $18.6 million player option for 2018-19 makes him unlikely to be moved.

If the Mavericks want to maximize what could be Nowitzki’s final season, and upgrade their point guard situation, making room to take on Lowry is not out of the question. The direction they go with the ninth overall pick in the draft will have some residual effect on any plan to sign a point guard in free agency.
