MLB Wild Card Standings: Cubs missed an opportunity
AL Wild Card Standings
Boston Red Sox (41-34, .547, +1.5)
New York Yankees (40-33, .548, +1.5)
It wasn’t a great week for the Yankees, but there were some positive signs. Most importantly, Masahiro Tanaka was brilliant in Friday night’s win over the Rangers. Tanaka tossed eight scoreless innings in the game, which lowered his ERA to 5.74. Unfortunately, Dellin Betances, Michael Pineda and Luis Severino – a trio that played a big part in New York’s early season success – all struggled, as did Tyler Clippard, who surrendered nine runs in just 1.1 innings across three appearances.
Cleveland Indians (39-35, .527, – GB)
Corey Kluber was dominant in two outings for the Indians last week, though he received just enough run support for Cleveland to win one of those starts. Kluber pitched a three-hit shutout against the Orioles June 19, in which he struck out 11 and did not allow a walk. Saturday against the Twins, the former Cy Young winner allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 13.
Tampa Bay Rays (40-38, .513, 1 GB)
Texas Rangers (38-37, .507, 1.5 GB)
Los Angeles Angels (40-39, .506, 1.5 GB)
Seattle Mariners (39-39, .500, 2 GB)
Kansas City Royals (37-37, .500, 2 GB)
Baltimore Orioles (37-38, .493, 2.5 GB)
Toronto Blue Jays (36-39, .480, 3.5 GB)
Oakland Athletics (34-42, .447, 6 GB)
Detroit Tigers (33-42, .440, 6.5 GB)
Chicago White Sox (32-42, .432, 7 GB)
The AL Wild Card standings are still very tight at the top with five teams within two games of a playoff position, including the Kansas City Royals, who were left for dead through the first two months of the season, but are 14-7 in June.
