3. Derrick Rose, PG, New York Knicks

28-years old and a former MVP with the Chicago Bulls. Why would he belong on this list? A long history of injuries, character and locker-room concerns later, Derrick Rose is now one of the most overrated free agents this offseason.

One of the worst points of the season for the New York Knicks — and Derrick Rose — was when the former MVP went AWOL on the Knicks in the middle of the season. It was in mid-January when New York was struggling and Rose decided not to show up for a game against the New Orleans’ Pelicans. Not only did he not show up, he didn’t inform the team of his departure. No matter what the excuses, it was a poor showing of leadership and character.

Rose had one of his best seasons statistically, dropping 18.4 points and dishing 4.4 assists per game in 64 appearances. But the Knicks’ point guard still hasn’t played at least 70 games in an NBA season since his MVP year in 2010-11. So whichever team does sign Rose has to get a solid backup point guard to spell him in games that Rose misses.

The former MVP improved his shooting from the field, but not from the 3-point line, only shooting at a 21 percent clip. For a point guard in today’s NBA, that’s just not cutting it. He’s still ball-dominant and centered around his athletic ability carrying him to the basket. It’s not a good thing when you’re 28 years old and announcers have to say that’s “vintage Derrick Rose.”

Rose still has some game left in him and can be an average point guard in the league, but he’s currently being over-valued on the free-agent market. Reports indicated that Derrick Rose would take a pay cut to stay with the Knicks, likely acknowledging his lack of suitors. Rose’s best days are behind him, so let’s not sign him to a massive free-agent contract.
