7. Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers, June 11, 2013

Stop me if you’ve heard this before — Yasiel Puig was involved in a heated exchange on the baseball field. This one came less than a week after he was called up from the minors, but Puig was evidently already rubbing people the wrong way. The Dodgers rookie took one in the helmet area, but did not start a brawl.

Dodgers starter Zack Greinke hit Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero in retaliation. That should have settled it. You get one of our guys, we’ll get one of yours. Greinke knows the unwritten rules as well as anybody in baseball. Apparently, Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy did not feel the score was settled and threw a pitch at Greinke’s head. All hell broke loose.

Whether he was dazed after being hit in the head, Greinke’s reaction to the unfolding situation was somewhat comical. He just stood there grasping his helmet and taking in the chaos. The highlight from the fracas was Mark McGwire and Matt Williams squaring off. They were two of the biggest sluggers of the Steroid Era. Both managers involved, Kirk Gibson and Don Mattingly, were huge names in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks had a very one-sided, but intense rivalry in the early 2010s. Los Angeles ruffled some feathers while celebrating (and maybe peeing) in the outfield pool at Chase Field after clinching on enemy territory later in the 2013 season. Talk about some sweet revenge.
