Taj Gibson sign with Timberwolves: 5 biggest questions we have
By Trey Daubert
4. Tom Thibodeau and the Derrick Rose question
Thibs seems to have an affection for his former Bulls players. Thibodeau was the head man in Chicago for five years and has tried to bring the Chicago band together North to Minnesota. Adding a superstar like Jimmy Butler was a no brainer but he ponied up the extra dollar to land Taj Gibson. Would the Timberwolves dare to add the former Bulls point guard Derrick Rose?
Rose clearly isn’t the same player that he was when he won the MVP in 2011. In fact, there is an argument to be made that Rose is an addition by subtraction. Rose shot an anemic .217 percent from 3-point range and is regarded as a terrible defender. Not to mention the fact that Rose is a ball-centric point guard and often times doesn’t get his teammates involved like he should. Then again, maybe that was a product of him being in New York, just ask Kristaps Porzingis how New York is treating him (insert emojie here!)
Minnesota does have a big point guard question, however. Ricky Rubio and Kris Dunn are gone via recent trades. Instead, Jeff Teague was signed to be the primary handler for the Wolves. The team now has to decide whether Tyus Jones, the former first-round pick from Duke, is adequate enough to be the backup option? If not, a player like Rose should be considered.
It’s tough to question the decisions Thibodeau has made in regards to the position. Trading Kris Dunn will likely prove to be a wise choice after he proved that he couldn’t play a lick in the league. After taking Dunn with the fifth overall pick last year from Providence, the young guard had the looks of a G-League player averaging 3.8 points on .377 percent shooting in his rookie year. Getting Jimmy Butler for 15 cents on the dollar was a no brainer.
Ricky Rubio clearly wasn’t a good fit either. Timberwolves fans remember all too well about the young team finding difficulties to score late in games. Not to mention the fact that teams never had to even guard Rubio beyond the stripe. Rubio is a terrific passer and great defensive player but he was the wrong fit on a team that lacks shooting ability.
Tyus Jones could be the answer but hasn’t got much of an opportunity behind a crowded unit. With Dunn and Rubio out of town, Jones seems to be a logical backup point guard option. Thibs knows his roster better than anyone and may feel differently.
Shelvin Mack, Darren Collison, and Ian Clark could be some other names to consider. Derrick Rose was a Real-Plus-Minus of -2.25 last year and clearly isn’t a starter at this stage in his career. If Thibs thinks he can reincarnate the 2010 version of Rose, maybe’s it’s worth the gamble. Personally, I would have a tough time rolling the dice on Rose factoring in his personality. Rose has faced rape charges in the past and even skipped a game altogether with the Knicks. That may not be the kind of player that is conducive to a young team.
