Taj Gibson sign with Timberwolves: 5 biggest questions we have
By Trey Daubert
2. Negotiate an extension for Andrew Wiggins
Wiggins will head into the final year of his deal with the Timberwolves this season. As a former no. 1 overall pick, Wiggins has the ability to really cash in on a deal. A contract could look similar to what Anthony Davis received a few years ago that pays him north of $127 million over five years. It even includes an option that will give him over $28 million in the last year of the deal. Wiggins isn’t the player the Brow is but, in today’s market, Wiggins could command numbers in a similar fashion.
Wiggins, 22, is a fine young player but hasn’t exactly transformed into a world beater. Wiggins averaged 23.6 points, 2.3 assists, and 4 rebounds per game over the course of the 2016-2017 regular season. Wiggins is a super-athletic player but defensively can be a nightmare at times. The defensive woes are quite odd considering he has the tools and defended marvelously in college. While it looked like Minnesota robbed the Cavs during the Kevin Love swap, Wiggins still needs to improve.
Again you can say this about most young players though. In the one-and-done era of the NBA, it takes players more time to develop. After another year or two, Wiggins will likely become the volume scorer and slasher we all hoped he would be. Keeping him in small market Minnesota is a must, working out an extension this summer hopefully won’t be too challenging.
