3. The Dodgers Need a Jack of All Trades

Time and again teams in all sports have relied upon one or two players to lead them to victory. For the Dodgers, they feel comfortable relying upon ace Clayton Kershaw to lead them through October. It hasn’t happened yet, but they got a taste of that goal in 2016 and they know that so long as Kershaw remains healthy, they can depend on him.

But even aces need support, and having someone in the starting rotation who can go deep in games would make a huge difference. It’s clear that the rotation needs some help with careless losses against teams like the July 2 loss to the Padres. (That loss, incidentally, falls on Kenta Maeda, who is now 6-4). With a bit of a struggle with consistency, the Dodgers should add someone who can fill that void.

The Dodgers don’t need (and probably don’t want) big names right now. Names have been floated around, including the White Sox’s Jose Quintana, Oakland’s Sonny Gray or the Mets’ Matt Harvey. It’s not clear whether or not they’ll be available, but guys like them could provide the support that the Dodgers need in the middle of the rotation.
