4. Shake Up the Outfield

The team with the highest payroll in baseball can afford to have a nice depth chart. If the infield looks crowded with Utley sitting on the bench, the Dodgers outfield looks even worse. There’s a lot of talent out there, but after the team knows what will happen once Gonzalez is healthy, it’s possible that they will have way too many people waiting in the wings.

However, injuries have befallen the outfield, with Andrew Toles (ACL) and Andre Ethier (herniated disc) both on the DL. It would have made sense at one point to deal one of those guys in a trade for a pitcher, but now they’re off the board.

The chance that Bellinger will need his spot back once Gonzalez recovers makes things complicated. Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig aren’t going anywhere. Chris Taylor has been playing well in left field and he’s putting up solid numbers (.279, 37 RBI, 10 HR) so it doesn’t make sense to get rid of him, but he could be the it-factor in a deal to get that starting pitcher the team needs. Taylor is versatile and can even jump into the infield if need be, so he could make a nice bartering chip should the right player come along.
