1. Gase would be willing to adapt

In choosing Jay Cutler over Kaepernick to replace Tannehill, Gase essentially went with the devil he knows rather than the devil he doesn’t know. Thanks to him, he’s built a roster that can contend for a playoff spot. The Dolphins’ offensive line was great when everyone was healthy and that helped Jay Ajayi look dominant at times.

The offensive talent surrounding the quarterback is good, but they still need somebody capable to put all the pieces together. Even though Gase has worked with Cutler before, he might’ve had an easier time with Kaepernick. His throwing mechanics are a lot sharper, and because he’s a dual-threat, he could get Laremy Tunsil and Mike Pouncey to block for him.

Tannehill has shown some capability of being a dual threat in the past, but not to the extent of Kaepernick. And after working with Tomsula and Chip Kelly the past two seasons, Gase might’ve been able to unlock Kaepernick’s true potential. Instead, the Dolphins’ offense will almost certainly take a step back.

While blackballing was not the reason the Dolphins didn’t sign Kaepernick, it might turn into a case of what could’ve been. It’s possible that Cutler rediscovers his form and leads the Dolphins to the playoffs, but if he doesn’t, fans will probably be left feeling as though they made the wrong choice.
