2. Far less prone to making mistakes than Cutler

While nobody’s saying that Kaepernick is a good quarterback, or that he’s even a league-average one, he’s certainly better than Cutler at this stage. Even his career stats are better than Cutler’s. He’s got a higher passer rating than him (88.9 vs. 85.7) while 1.8 percent of Kaepernick’s throws resulted in interceptions compared to 3.3 percent for Cutler. Just last season, Cutler had more interceptions than Kaepernick while playing in just five games.

The main reason why Cutler was the choice for the Dolphins was because his best season came under Adam Gase. As the offensive coordinator for the Bears in 2015, he helped Cutler throw 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, seven less than what he had the year before. His QB rating of 92.3 was also a career best.

Kaepernick has never had more than 10 interceptions in a season while Cutler has thrown up to 26 in his career. This is despite the fact that Kaepernick has a style of play that’s more susceptible to turnovers. Even though Gase is a wizard, he can’t fully cut down on Cutler’s mistakes.

Cutler may have to do what Sam Bradford did and resort to becoming a checkdown Charlie in order to clean up his interceptions. But that won’t help the Dolphins win many games.
