Mets’ Matt Harvey to make rehab start Saturday

The New York Mets announced that starting pitcher Matt Harvey will start a rehab assignment on Saturday. The right-hander will start for the Class A Brooklyn Cyclones against the Hudson Valley Renegades, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate.

Harvey, known as the “Dark Knight” for his love of Batman, has been on the disabled list since June 15 with a stress injury to his right shoulder. He has a 4-3 record with a 5.25 ERA in 13 starts for New York this season.

After Saturday’s start, Harvey will throw in front of Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen before making at least one more rehab start. He could come back to the majors by the end of August if there are no setbacks.

After much hype surrounding Harvey at the start of his career, the righty has been bitten by the injury bug in recent years. He partially tore his ulnar collateral ligament at the end of 2013, then had Tommy John surgery, costing him all of the following season.

After winning Comeback Player of the Year and leading the Mets to the World Series in 2015, Harvey missed the second half of last season after having surgery to combat thoracic outlet syndrome.

Harvey’s return would be a big lift to the Mets, who have already been without ace Noah Syndergaard since the end of April with a torn right lat.

New York has struggled, going 20-27 since Harvey went out. Despite the solid efforts of Jacob deGrom, the rest of the rotation has struggled thanks to inconsistent performances by Steven Matz, Zach Wheeler, Seth Lugo, Rafael Montero and Chris Flexen.

While the Mets’ playoff chances are slim, seeing Harvey throw several strong starts will allow fans to have some hope for a return to the excitement the team provided during their run to the World Series.
