Su’a Cravens considering retirement from NFL
By Joe Schiller
Washington Redskins 2016 second-round pick Su’a Cravens is considering retirement from the NFL.
After just one season in the NFL, Washington Redskins safety Su’a Cravens is pondering retirement. But after meeting with team officials this weekend, the decision has been put on hold.
Cravens, a second-round pick, appeared in 11 games for the Redskins last season. He finished the year with one interception and 33 total tackles.
Along with the retirement questions, Cravens was recovering from offseason meniscus surgery, but was said to be ready for the start of the regular season. With DeAngelo Hall placed on the PUP list, Cravens was expected to be a key contributor to the Redskins secondary. Now his status for the home opener against the Eagles is in question.
Cravens has had troubles physically since entering the league. Along with the knee injury, he suffered a concussion and biceps injury last season.
Given the issue, there really is no definitive timetable for Cravens’ return. Because the decision to retire is already in question, it’s going to be a hard one to get away. Redskins team officials can say what they want, but it’s ultimately up to Cravens to make the final decision. If Cravens chooses to retire, he’d one of the youngest players to do that at just 22 years old.
No matter the decision, the Redskins will likely take Cravens off of the active roster before the start of the season. That way they can open up a roster spot to bring in another player. If known about the situation early, a possibility would have been recently released Broncos safety T.J. Ward, but he has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
