Derrius Guice

RB, LSU

Derrius Guice was the workhorse as expected in the season opener against BYU on Saturday night. He carried the brunt of the load running the ball and really punished the Cougars’ defense with his powerful rushes.

He carried the ball a solid 27 times for 122 yards and finished with two touchdowns. His longest run of the night was for only 13 yards, but watching him take hit after hit and keep his legs moving showed off the power that he has made a name for himself on thus far.

When the opposition is stacking the box, a running back is going to have some tough sledding. Guice welcomes that kind of challenge and it showed with his 4.5 yards per carry average in the team’s shutout win.

As the week’s go on and he keeps getting a healthy amount of carries, he’s going to certainly bust one open for a lot longer than 13 yards. Sometimes, a running back just has to live with a night where he earns the tough yards.

In a way that sort of defines the type of running back that he is. A tough runner that welcomes the challenge of the defense sending everyone to stop him. It was a good night for his draft stock on Saturday.
