Oklahoma Sooners 4-0

Last week: Win at Baylor, 49-41
Last rank: 3rd

If Oklahoma lost to Baylor, the College Football Playoff Rankings would have gone in a different direction. For a time, this looked possible, as the Sooners struggled to put away the Bears, along with being down for much of this game. It’s the same team that just lost to Liberty and UTSA, coupled with a blowout defeat to Duke.

Close wins won’t break a team’s season. Against a lowly program like Baylor, however, and for the No. 3 team, bigger things were expected. With that said, OU survived and kept their spot at No. 3 in the College Football Playoff Rankings.

Despite the issues, this is still an elite Oklahoma team. Baker Mayfield may not be anyone’s daddy, but he’s still one of the best quarterbacks in the nation that will be in the 2017 Heisman Trophy hunt. The team will succeed or fail on his play. Running back Abdul Adams looks like a featured offensive player, too, especially with the 99-yard run he had.

Oklahoma will face Iowa State, another opponent near the bottom of the Big 12, in Week 6 (they have a bye week on Sep. 30). To keep their status for the College Football Playoff, they can’t look past the Cyclones, as Texas will be waiting the week after.
