5. Defending

As previously mentioned, defending in FIFA 18 is a lot more difficult.

However, there are a few things to know, to help improve defensive skills. First and foremost, leave your defenders on your side of the pitch. Do not, under any circumstances, break the back line. With the presence of a more precise passing system, wingers and strikers can pierce the defense with ease when given a window. Therefore, it’s best to leave your defenders back, in case of a counter attack.

Chances are, the opposition will get a good breakaway once or twice in the game. You know, the chance in which you know they’ll score. What most FIFA players do not know is, there’s a way to stop that. Take good angles with your defenders. Don’t hopelessly chase attackers, pulling on their jerseys, attempting to hold them back. In the rare case that your keeper has a one on one situation with the opposing player, hold the ‘Y’ button to bring the keeper out of goal. In most cases, the opposition is not expecting that, resulting in a high success rate for the defense. As a result, you’ll likely give the other team a corner, but hey, that’s better than conceding a goal.

Lastly, the ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons are your friends. Avoid slide tackles at all costs. If you’re a beginner, do not even go near the ‘X’ button while on defense. You’ll likely get yourself a card and concede a free kick, maybe even a penalty. Use the ‘A’ button to stay in front of attackers. While you still have to use the sticks to control your defenders, using the ‘A’ button will keep your defender’s shoulders square in front of the ball. Use ‘B’ to perform a standing tackle. The ‘B’ button is the most useful tool in the game, that goes for both sides of the ball. Standing tackles are incredibly effective in FIFA 18, especially when the opposition is taking too long to shoot or just trying to show off a little too much.

Don’t be the guy to concede multiple goals in a game. Counter-attacks and breakaways will happen, stay calm. Use these tips to allow yourself to stay in the game and build a defensive wall that would make Donald Trump envy you.
