After nine games, only one point separates Burnley and Newcastle in the table ahead of their game on Monday at Turf Moor stadium. Newcastle are seventh, with 14 points, one place and point ahead of Burnley. After starting the season with two losses, Newcastle have picked up 14 points in their last seven games. Burnley lost 3-0 to Manchester City in their last game, ending a streak that saw them pick up points in six straight games.
After Everton fired Ronald Koeman, Burnley’s Sam Dyche has emerged as a candidate to replace the Dutch manager. Despite sitting seventh, the Clarets are in the bottom half of the league in goals. Strikers Chris Wood and Sam Vokes have scored five of the club’s eight goals. However, Vokes has not scored since Burnley’s opening weekend upset of Chelsea, while Wood has scored once in the past five games.

Newcastle are playing a conservative style under manager Rafa Benitez. Only the top three teams, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham have allowed fewer than the eight goals that the Magpies have allowed. Center-back Jamaal Lascelles could break into the England squad at the World Cup after his strong start to the season. The Newcastle captain has played well defensively and is tied for the team lead with two goals.
