4. Josh McDaniels

McDaniels is far enough removed from his failed stint as head coach of the Denver Broncos (11-17 in 2009-2010) that it has faded from memory. After a year as offensive coordinator for St. Louis Rams, McDaniels has been back at Bill Belichick’s side as Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2012.

McDaniels has the luxury of making sure his second shot as an NFL head coach is absolutely the right fit. One potential option after this season, the Detroit Lions with former Patriots scout and personnel man Bob Quinn as general manager, is off the table with Jim Caldwell’s contract extension. But there will be other openings, and McDaniels will surface as a candidate again

McDaniels may know when the Belichick-Tom Brady duo will leave New England, if they do so essentially together, and he could be tabbed as Belichick’s successor. Or on the flip side, McDaniels may know when it will be time to jump ship and take a head coaching job elsewhere, if that’s what he wants to do.

In any case, the Bengals should have interest in McDaniels. New England’s playoff schedule may play a role, but McDaniels should be willing to go through the interview process for head coaching jobs.
