Bret Bielema

Bielema’s move from Wisconsin to Arkansas has gone disastrously, and the Razorbacks have no choice but to fork over his massive buyout next weekend.

Wisconsin didn’t miss a beat after Barry Alvarez retired, as Bielema went 92-68 over his seven seasons with three Rose Bowl appearances. Bielema made the shocking decision to bolt for Arkansas in what was considered a lateral move at best, and didn’t make any friend on the way out by bolting Madison ahead of the 2012 Rose Bowl.

The Razorbacks were reeling after the unceremonious end of the Bobby Petrino era, and indeed went 3-9 in Bielema’s debut campaign. Bielema got things moving in the right direction the next season with a mark of 7-6, improving to eight wins in 2015.

That’s the best Arkansas has done in Bielema’s five years, as a 4-7 mark this season brings his overall record to 29-32. Arkansas has not been competitive against the top half of the SEC, and Bielema would probably already be gone if the Razorbacks hadn’t come from behind to beat FBS newcomer Coastal Carolina by a point two weeks ago.

Bielema’s defenses, which were so good at Wisconsin, have been terrible over the past three years, and the Razorbacks are surrendering 35.8 points per game this season. Bielema’s ceiling in Fayetteville is eight wins, and Arkansas will move in a different direction with the program currently trending down.
