High Priced Quarterbacks

Carson Wentz – Philadelphia Eagles ($7100) – Coming off his worst performance of the season, Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Carson Wentz tops DraftKings pricing for the position. The Eagles offense struggled in Seattle despite a banged up Seahawks’ secondary. This week the Eagles travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams. This is a possible playoff preview between two newly explosive offenses and strong defensive units. The Rams rank as the fifth-toughest defense to opposing quarterbacks over the last four weeks. On the season, Los Angeles is the third-toughest defense to the quarterbacks. Wentz has proven to be close to matchup proof. If he is missing his prime target, tight end Zach Ertz, this matchup gets even tougher. This seems like a good week to pay down at quarterback despite this game possibly being a shoot-out.

Phillip Rivers – Los Angeles Chargers ($6800) – The Los Angeles Chargers, led by quarterback Phillip Rivers, are playing as well as almost any team in the league. The Chargers offense is surging and their defense is coming together. Rivers is the fifth-highest scoring quarterback over the last four weeks and is positioning his team to get into the playoffs. The Redskins travel to Los Angeles to challenge the Chargers in Week 14. The banged up Redskins team has been up and down defensively all season. Over the last four weeks they rank 22nd in points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. I like Rivers here despite the tough defensive matchup.

Jared Goff – Los Angeles Rams ($6600) – Another Los Angeles team that is poised to make the playoffs are the Rams led by second-year quarterback Jared Goff. It’s amazing the flip Goff has had in one season after being drafted first overall. This Rams offense is now loaded with weapons and Goff is under the tutelage of Sean McVay. The Rams welcome Philadelphia to Los Angeles for a battle between two likely playoff teams. Philadelphia’s defense has done a drastic turn around since the beginning of the season thanks in part to an elite front four. Over the past four weeks this Eagles defense is the second-toughest for opposing quarterbacks. In a strength versus strength battle, I think the Rams offense figures some stuff out and Goff eventually pays off.

Alex Smith – Kansas City Chiefs ($6600) – The early season MVP was Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. Since their bye week however, the Chiefs have looked miserable and like a completely different team. Last week they lost to the Jets despite Smith’s strong play. That was the best game Smith and the Chiefs offense have played since that bye week. Good news for Chiefs fans is they get another weak defense with the Raiders up next. Oakland ranks tenth in points to quarterbacks this season. The Chiefs will be without their top corner, so this game has the possibility of being a shoot-out. Smith should put up points against this weak defense and hit his value.

Derek Carr – Oakland Raiders ($6400) – On the other side of the field from Smith is Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. The Raiders signal caller has had a bad season coming off an injury a year ago, after playing the best he has in his short career. Carr is outside of the top twenty in fantasy points for quarterbacks with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. This week he has a rematch with the Chiefs team that he had his best games of the season against. In the Week 7 matchup, Carr threw for 417 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Chiefs are a bottom five team in points allowed to opposing quarterbacks and are without corner Marcus Peters for the game. Carr could have another monster performance in a game that has massive shoot-out potential.
