Winning union of Jon Gruden-Derek Carr was foretold before the ’14 NFL draft (Video)

Jon Gruden and Derek Carr may be coach and quarterback soon, and it’s safe to say it will at least start out as a happy marriage.

Derek Carr’s journey to being one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL, at least for now, started with the process heading into the 2014 draft. He was one subject of Jon Gruden’s always well-done QB Camp, featuring the top prospects at the position each year, before being drafted in the second round (No. 36 overall) by the Oakland Raiders that April.

All signs point to Gruden going back for a second stint as Raiders’ head coach, once the team satisfies the Rooney Rule with a willing participant in a sham interview and Gruden calls a Wild Card Round playoff game for ESPN on Saturday. One of his primary tasks will be getting more out of the Raiders’ offense and, most importantly, Carr after his down year this year mirrored the team’s.

If their meeting in 2014 is any indication, the coming longer-term union of Carr and Gruden will appeal to both guys.

Gruden is easy, and often incredibly over the top, with his praise for players on Monday Night Football broadcasts and in these pre-draft quarterback evaluation episodes. But the money quotes from this meeting with Carr (if only in hindsight) start at around the 1:56 mark of the video below. Gruden is talking about how the offense at Fresno State and Carr’s playing style is different than that of his brother David, the No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Texans in 2002.

Raiders’ fans can now be worked into a frenzy over Gruden saying he wanted Carr, almost four years ago, and Carr reciprocating quickly with a desire to win Super Bowls together.
