30. North Texas vs. Army

  • Date: Nov. 18
  • Outcome: North Texas wins 52-49

The Army Black Knights were among one of the best stories of any team in the nation in 2017. Not only did Army win 10 games, but also improved the program’s win total for the second straight season.

Yet, it’s not just the Black Knights that had a really good year. Their opponent in this matchup, the North Texas Mean Green, also surprised some in 2017. UNT ended with a rough loss to head coach Neal Brown and the Troy Trojans in the postseason, but that does not take away from what they were able to do.

Army rushed for more than 500 yards here, and North Texas quarterback Mason Fine nearly managed 400 passing yards. The offense did not slow down at any point in this contest. It went back and forth between the clock controlling Army offense and the high-flying UNT passing attack.

The kicker for the Mean Green, Trevor Moore, knocked through a 39-yard field goal to notch the win for UNT. This really helped continue the turnaround for UNT throughout the entire regular season, but did not derail the momentum of the Black Knights too much.
