By John Buhler
The Women’s 7.5km sprint results are in. Here are the three women who took home medals in the first biathlon event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.
The first of 11 medal events in the biathlon during the 2018 Pyeongchang Games are in the books. On Saturday night in South Korea and very early Saturday morning in the United States, Germany’s Laura Dahlmeier would take home the gold in the Women’s 7.5km sprint.
Her time of 21 minutes and 6.2 seconds allowed her to capture her first medal in an Olympic event. She was one of only two competitors to not miss a shooting target, prone or standing, in the event and the only one two finish in the top-45 to do so.
Earning the silver medal was Norway’s Marte Olsbu. She completed the women’s 7.5km sprint in 21 minutes and 30.4 seconds, but did have a penalty in one of the prone targets. This is also her first Olympic medal, coming in her first-ever Olympic event.
Taking home the bronze medal was the Czech Republic’s Veronica Vitkova. She finished the women’s 7.5km sprint in 21 minutes and 32.0 seconds, but did have a penalty on one of the standing targets. This is Vitkova’s third Olympic Games and second medal. She was part of the Mixed Relay team that took home the silver medal in the 2014 Sochi Games.

Next: Best Olympian from each state
The United States remains medalless in the biathlon in the Winter Olympic Games. The Women’s 7.5km sprint is clearly not the United States’ forte. Fortunately, there are 10 other events where the United States could conceivably medal in the biathlon in PyeongChang. Congratulations to Dahlmeier, Olsbu and Vitkova for taking home their medals. Better luck next time, America.
