Women’s 500m medals in short track speedskating went to Italy, the Netherlands and Canada.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: No medal for Maame Biney. In fact, she didn’t qualify for the semifinals, after coming in fourth place in her quarterfinal heat. It was a disappointing finish, but the 18-year-old will no doubt be back. She has a long career ahead of her. As for the Olympians who triumphed? Allow us to introduce you.

The gold medal went to Italian Arianna Fontana, Dutch Yara Van Kerkhof won silver and Kim Boutin of Canada took home the bronze. Elise Christie of Great Britain and Minjeong Choi of China also skated in the finals race.

Fontana’s final time was 42.569, considerably ahead of Van Kerkhof’s 43.256 and Boutin’s 43.881. Christie and Choi hold the world and Olympic records, respectively, but Choi finished with a penalty and Christie came in at 1:23.063. Choi actually finished in a photo finish alongside Fontana, but was penalized for cutting the line.

The short track is one of the most popular sports in South Korea and the crowds at the short track races are some of the loudest and most enthusiastic of any of the events at the games. South Korea, too, is more than proficient in the sport, it’s the contest in which the country has won the vast majority of its winter medals.
