2018 NBA Mock Draft: Trae Young could reset the Kings backcourt
This is how the dominoes fell in this mock draft, but I know it’s not fair. Bates-Diop is the most ideal Celtic in this entire range, and Boston is exactly where he falls in this edition.
We’ve all heard how valuable the Celtics’ versatility has been this year. They are able to switch on defense at all times, a tactic that helps protect their young players’ weaknesses as well as Kyrie Irving’s occasional inability to contain ball-handlers. With Al Horford and Aron Baynes protecting the rim, it’s a recipe that has worked well for the Celtics this season.
Bates-Diop is fairly similar to 2017 No. 3 overall pick Jayson Tatum, whom Boston targeted before eventually trading down in the draft to choose him. Tatum was thought of as someone who could create a good shot with the game on the line in an isolation situation, something that is still one the rarest NBA skills. His game translated immediately.
Bates-Diop is a similar scorer, able to get off good shots at all three levels. The junior has been lights-out from distance this season as well, and his offensive profile is appealing.
The Celtics would know exactly what to do with him.
