Here’s how you can watch the Olympic men’s 1000m short track final race online and by live stream.
Not to be confused with the speedskating 1000m — in which controversial American skater Shani Davis looks to assert his skill once again — the 1000m short track race takes place Saturday, Feb. 17 at 6 a.m. ET. (Quick refresher: speedskating is when two skaters race against the clock in their own lanes; short track is when four skaters race against each other in one field.)
In any case, the 1000m short track is anyone’s game. While South Korea is a powerhouse in the sport, star Hwang Dae-heon is only expected to win bronze — assuming, of course, he doesn’t bring something extra on account of the home crowd. Gold medal favorite is Shaolin Sandor Liu, of Hungary, and silver may go to China’s Wu Dajing.
NBC is the exclusive broadcaster of the games and while their TV listing schedule remains chaotic, the online portal consistently provides live streams that allow you to watch online in real time.
The early hour may be annoying to you, but short track has a rather good reason for refusing to conform to American primetime demands: it’s crazy popular in South Korea. Like soccer in Rio or baseball in Boston, as the New York Times likes to say. So it was, perhaps, non-negotiable that the locals got the opportunity to watch their nation’s favorite sport in primetime, Korea Time. Fair enough — that’s what alarm clocks and coffee are for!
