Olympics women’s hockey is starting its medal round quarterfinals. The first of the two will be on Friday when Switzerland faces the Olympic Athletes of Russia. Its second will be on Saturday, Feb. 16 starting at 2:40 a.m. ET when Sweden and Finland do battle.
This should renew what has been a great hockey rivalry. The two countries have faced each other many times over the years, so they know each other quite well.
Sweden enters the quarterfinals after finishing in second place in Group B. A 2-1 loss to Switzerland ensured them of the lower of Group B’s seeds that get to advance to the quarterfinals. Pernilla Winberg has the team lead with two goals. Fanny Rask, Elin Lundberg, Erika Grahm, and Winberg are tied for the team lead with three points. Sweden went 2-1-0 during the group stage.
On the other side of the ice, Finland finished as the third seed out of Group A. Tough losses to the United States and Canada led them to a 1-2-0 record during the preliminary round. They scored just six goals in the medal round, and five of those were in their win over the Olympic Athletes of Russia.
