11. Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic are a uniform enigma. Their light-ish blue and black color scheme is beautiful, and by prominently using both colors, they show an awareness of that fact, while at the same time, they persist with pinstripes and an otherwise standard template. Thanks to their colors, their unis have a high floor, but are they taking full advantage?

On one hand, the Magic are the only NBA team that uses pinstripes, adding a positive element of uniqueness; at the same time, the colors could be sharper and the front design could be updated. It’s a thin line.

They tried something new with their City editions. In an apparent effort to symbolize the “magic” of the solar system and reaching for the stars, they created a deep navy base dotted with stars, a picturesque interpretation of space. Looking closely, they appear a bit too outlandish, a ‘90s-type eccentricity that doesn’t have a place in an age of clean-cut simplicity. Those concerns still exist when seen on court, but they turned out much more muted than I expected.

Surprisingly enough, they look pretty good when they’re worn on the hardcourt. Not bad, Orlando.
