2018 NFL Mock Draft: Jets fly high with Baker Mayfield
By Brad Weiss
The New York Giants came into the 2017 NFL season with plenty of expectations, after reaching the playoffs for the first time in five seasons the year before. However, they were one of the more disappointing teams in the NFC, and by the end of the season, both their head coach and general manager were shown the door. New head coach Pat Shurmur led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC title game as the team’s offensive coordinator with Case Keenum at quarterback, and should breathe some fresh air into the organization.
Heading into this season, the plan is to move forward with quarterback Eli Manning for at least the time being, so they may pass on a quarterback in the first round. If they do decide to go that route, Saquon Barkley from Penn State could do a lot to help this team immediately. Not only is he an incredible runner, but he is also one of the best in the country in the passing game out of the backfield, which is something Manning and company have not had in a long time.
The Giants have talent on both sides of the ball, and the odds are they will be significantly improved over last season. Shurmur is a fantastic coach, and new general manager Dave Gettleman will likely bolster the offensive line via free agency. Barkley makes a lot of sense at No. 2, even if running backs do not usually go this high in the first round.
