Sam Bradford rumors: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are now theoretically committed to Blake Bortles through the 2020 season. But adding another quarterback this offseason is still not out of the question. Using an early-round draft pick on the position now looks like the most viable path.
Jacksonville still doesn’t have a lot of cap space, even after the multi-year to drop Bortles’ cap number for this year (a shade over $30.4 million as of this writing). A run at Kirk Cousins is now obviously off the table, but there’s something to signing a veteran like Bradford as an upgrade over Chad Henne behind Bortles. A big part of the reason Bortles has kept the starting job has been the lack of good options behind him.
Jaguars executive VP Tom Coughlin has already cited the increased expectations now on Bortles, and it’s easy to see him buckling under that pressure.
The possibility of an open training camp competition for the starting job under center in Jacksonville is out the window now. But a team that otherwise looks Super Bowl-ready can’t allow itself to be held back by dismal quarterback play, or in particular Bortles reverting fully back to his previous form. A healthy Bradford is a high-end backup that can keep a solid ship afloat if necessary.
