CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – FEBRUARY 21: De’Andre Hunter /

147. . F. Virginia. De'Andre Hunter. 28. player

Hunter is an exciting prospect, looking much the part of a modern NBA four during Virginia’s run to the top of the NCAA this winter.

He is quietly shooting 38 percent on 50 attempts from 3 this season, which contributes to a 57.9 true shooting percentage. Hunter is strong enough to compete against bigger players, though his feel is iffy, as he often bangs into defenders out of control or turns the ball over in traffic. Because of his shooting ability and quickness, he is at his best in space, attacking transition defense or closeouts behind the arc.

The biggest reason he’s risen so much this season as a prospect is his defensive potential. He looks like the best defenders in the NBA from a physical standpoint, from Kyle Anderson to Draymond Green to Pascal Siakam. Athleticism will be the key in determining his ceiling as a defender. If his switchiness and strength translate, you’re looking at someone who stands 6-8 but could play small-ball center for a team willing to try.

Hunter is someone to watch in March — will coach Tony Bennett give him more run? The freshman is playing just 20 minutes per game this season, despite staying out of foul trouble and providing excellent floor spacing. He has become more consistent throughout the year, and Virginia is best when he plays. Hunter could continue to rise if he plays well the next few weeks.
