Chicago Bears full 2018 NFL mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 2 – Pick 40
Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn
Outside of linebacker the corner position is an area of concern for a strong Bears defense. The team was smart in signing Kendall Fuller to a long-term deal, matching his offer from the Packers. Another wise decision was made in keeping Prince Amukamara around on a short term deal. It reduces the impact a rookie corner will need to make but does not completely fill the need. In this draft it allows the Bears to wait until the second round to address that need.
A deep corner class is going to push talented players down the board. This mock that corner is Carlton Davis of Auburn. With the notoriety received by Denzel Ward and Josh Jackson, it’s easy to forget Davis.
At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, Davis is the ideal press man corner in the NFL. His size and arm length stand out as his best strength. Concerns about his speed were negated by a 4.53 40 yard dash at the combine in Indianapolis. He’s still got some work to do in mirror coverage. His press ability will make the learning curve a little shallower entering the NFL. The NFL’s Lance Zerlein compares Davis to Richard Sherman because of his length and ability to press at the line.
For Chicago Davis would be used as an outside corner and allow Fuller to kick inside on three corner sets. He would eventually replace Amukamara as the full time corner opposite Fuller in 2019. Chicago is getting a player who, in the right scheme, could be a lock-down corner in the NFL.
