Shortstop, High End Spend

Didi Gregorius, $4,700

N/A

The top end at shortstop today is interesting. There’s plenty of name value but one player stands out heads and shoulders and he plays in Yankee Stadium. We’ve talked about the amount of fly balls Jaime Garcia is giving up. Gregorius should be licking his chops because he’s been destroying lefty pitching in 2018. His average is over .320, the OPS is over 1.150, the ISO is at .407(!) and the wOBA is .475. You certainly have to pay up to get to him but Gregorius could be worth the price of admission today. His ground ball percentage is under 30 percent and he’s walking a healthy amount vs the handedness as well. He seems to be about as safe is it gets in baseball.

Also Consider – Franciso Lindor, $4,300

Mid-Range

One of the reasons Gregorius is so appealing on this slate is because the middle of the road and the value plays at shortstop are iffy at best. Scott Kingery is interesting, but Pirates starter Trevor Williams pitches extremely well against righties in his career. If you believe Yonny Chirinos is due to struggle, Eduardo Escobar is likely the best choice in this mid-range. He’s been playing well, hits righties well and it’s pretty hard to believe Chirinos will stay this unhittable. At $2,900, Escobar certainly doesn’t break the bank.

Value

Jose Iglesias, $2,300

.000/.000/.000 with 0 HR in 2 at-bats

You probably have a better chance at winning the lottery today than Iglesias hitting a home run but his price is the perfect punt play. His numbers against lefties are at least respectable, even if unspectacular. He’s hit lefties at a .281 average and a .323 wOBA. Those aren’t great but they are better than his career numbers as a whole, which are .267 and .294, respectively. There’s every reason to think the Detroit offense beats up on Eric Skoglund and the beleaguered Royals bullpen today. You could do worse with this $2,300 than spend it on Iglesias.
