3. Swansea lose and Southampton win to as relegation zone heats up

Two sides that are very close to the drop are Southampton and Swansea. Southampton occupy 17th spot in the league while Swansea sit a point and a place ahead of them in 16th. This weekend both teams face difficult away trips which could see them swap league positions.

Southampton travel north to face Everton at Goodison Park while Swansea face a tough test against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Swansea had a slight revival when Carlos Carvalhal took over as manager but, their form of late has been less inspiring.

It’s hard to see the Welsh side taking anything from their match with Bournemouth, who are strong at home and thrive on the atmosphere at the Vitality Stadium. It’s tough to play for a point there and the Cherries’ pace could be too much for Swansea’s back line. Eddie Howe’s side are not necessarily safe themselves so they’ll be gunning for all three points as well.

The Saints have looked much better under the guidance of Mark Hughes and arguably should already be out of the relegation zone after strong performances against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in matches they ended up losing.

Their chances of Premier League survival seem more promising than Swansea’s and on Saturday they can take a big step to safety by beating Everton. That will be a tough ask but they certainly have the players to do it.
