White Sox will be without second baseman Yoan Moncada for at least 10 days. How should fantasy owners react?

The Chicago White Sox are struggling a bit this season as they are last in the American League Central with a 9-21 record. They are also not immune to the injury bug. The team placed young second baseman Yoan Moncada on the 10-day DL with hamstring tightness. What should fantasy owners do to replace him?

As a result of the injury, the White Sox will be calling up Jose Rendon. He isn’t someone worth adding because Moncada is expected to be back soon after the 10 days is up. There are a few players worth adding outside of the Chicago organization.

Howie Kendrick and Daniel Robertson are owned in close to 50 percent of CBS Sports leagues. If you play in a deeper league, Enrique Hernandez is available in 90 percent of leagues and will be getting more playing time with the loss of Corey Seager.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a name not known by the majority of fantasy owners. However, with injuries taking out 75 percent of the Texas Rangers infield, he is getting more than his fair share of playing time.

Back to Moncada, he should be back as soon as he’s eligible to return. James Fegan of The Athletic tweeted that he was ready to play after just a couple of days of rest. But the White Sox decided to put him on the DL. They aren’t going to be competing for much, so why risk the injury to one of their young stars.

Hamstrings have a history of hanging out long after the player is ready to return to action. This is something to monitor in the first couple of weeks after he’s back. Make sure he’s running at full speed and not pulling up short when hustling out a groundball.

Moncada is having a great season. In 29 games this year, he has six home runs, 15 RBIs, 17 runs scored and a .263 average. He has 17 walks but is second in strikeouts with 49.

His 37.1 percent strikeout rate is going to do anyone any favors. If you have him and are penalized for strikeouts, you’re hoping he improves in the second half. However, his 12.9 percent walk rate is offsetting some of that damage.

With the shallow second basemen pool, there is no one that should be dropping Moncada. Stash him on your DL for the 10 or so days and manage your lineup until he returns. I would look to trade him if you own him in a re-draft league.
