3. Asdrubal Cabrera

The Mets shouldn’t look to just unload pitching ahead of the deadline. They also have to take a look and see if any bats can bring back value. Cabrera is one player who could net the Mets a meaningful prospect.

Cabrera’s age (32) and the fact that he’s also in the last year of his current deal may hold his value down some. However, if a team is looking for a second base rental he could represent the top of the market. The Mets offense hasn’t been good this season, but it’s been a pretty solid year for Cabrera.

He’s currently hitting .284/.332/.489 at the plate. Those aren’t dominant numbers, but they are well above average for his position. If a contender has a hole in the middle of their infield, Cabrera is certainly worth a call.

His value will also get a bump because he can also play shortstop in a pinch. He doesn’t have the defensive range to really hold up as a starter there, but he can serve as an impact bat off the bench who can play the position passably.

Cabrera is one of those players who can make a quiet move ahead of the deadline, but end up paying massive dividends for the team that acquires him. He’s a valuable trade chip the Mets definitely need to cash in.
