The 2018 ESPYs live stream: Watch online
By Nir Regev
Here’s how you can watch The 2018 ESPYs hosted by Danica Patrick online via live stream or the old-fashioned way right on your television.
The 2018 ESPY Awards, commemorating this past year in the sports world, will air from 8-11 p.m. ET on ABC Wednesday, July 18. Iconic NASCAR/IndyCar driver and multiple year GoDaddy.com nationwide lead Danica Patrick will host the event from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater. You can catch the award show online with ABC’s live stream. There will also be an ESPYs Red Carpet airing on ESPN2 starting at 5 p.m. ET then ESPN at 7 p.m. ET. Catch the Red Carpet online at WatchESPN.com.
ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Yearly, with much of the winning results being determined by online fan vote these days (the ceremony originally started in 1993). Last year’s ESPYs were hosted by NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, who is primarily remembered for a joke about the Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant that left him seething and Russell Westbrook seemingly covering his face to hide a reaction. Looks like there won’t be a part two to this saga with Manning not hosting the 2018 award show.
Durant also happens to be nominated for Best Championship Performance at this year’s ESPYs after winning the 2018 NBA Finals MVP. When it comes to Best NBA Player however, Durant (who last won the award at the 2014 ESPYs) was not nominated this year. LeBron James, Anthony Davis, James Harden, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are this year’s nominees with Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Philly’s Ben Simmons contending for Breakthrough Athlete.
LeBron James has won the Best NBA Player award at The ESPYS both prior years for a total of six times. It’s a pretty good bet he’ll be taking home the award again this year, after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their fourth straight NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors were nominated as one of the Best Teams in Sports.
The contenders for Best Male Athlete include: Tom Brady (NFL), James Harden (NBA), Jose Altuve (MLB), and Alexander Ovechkin (NHL). The contenders for Best Female Athlete include: Mikaela Shiffrin (Ski), Chloe Kim (Snowboarding), Sylvia Fowles (WNBA), and Julie Ertz (NWSL).
When it comes for Best Olympic Moment, the first thing viewers remember is Shaun White’s legendary run on the halfpipe for a gold medal, so naturally he’s been nominated. The other contenders for Best Olympic Moment include: Jessie Diggins & Kikkan Randall (Cross Country Ski), U.S. Men’s Curling Victory, and USA Women’s Hockey defeating Canada in the Winter Olympics.
