Jerick McKinnon – RB, San Francisco 49ers

ADP: #29 (RB15)

Before you internally curse my choice here and tweet insults at me while reciting the details of his signing bonus, I totally get it. They paid a lot for him, and that means something in the modern NFL. Running backs don’t typically get those type of deals. It’s reasonable to project him to move up in drafts. Just not this far.

Let’s apply the logic most of us in the journalism industry use when making career choices: ignore the money. McKinnon was paid a lot of dough to be a 49er, but now that he’s settled in with the team he actually has to produce to stay on the field.

That production has to be pretty insane to warrant his ADP. Let’s examine how McKinnon performed as a ball carrier last season:

Jerick McKinnon NFL Rank, 2017
Yards Per Carry 47th
Yards After Contact 30th
Yards Created Per Carry 24th
Breakaway Run % 32nd

There were some burst plays once in awhile but from a between the tackles standpoint he was very unimpressive.

I know what you’re thinking. “Shutup, he’s a pass-catching specialist!”  Okay, I’ll bite:

Jerick McKinnon NFL Rank, 2017
Catch % 22nd
Yards Per Target 27th
Yards Per Reception 33rd
Fantasy Points Per Opportunity 37th

With the exception of potentially being the strongest man in the history of men, McKinnon isn’t anything special. He’s also a completely different athlete with pads on. McKinnon is an RB2 candidate with potential upside, but his draft price is #NoBueno.
