3. Jonathan Loaisiga

The Nicaraguan right hand came out of nowhere to boost the Yankees rotation early in the year. He was sent down to manage his workload, but that didn’t work out as planned. Loaisiga has battled injuries in the minors during most of the season.

In a strange way, that might work out to Loaisiga’s favor in September. He hasn’t thrown that many innings on the year and he’s getting healthy at the right time. It’s not out of the question that he could come back and earn a spot on the postseason roster. The ability to deploy Loaisiga as a starter or reliever will be a tempting option for Boone down the stretch.

2. Clint Frazier

If Frazier hadn’t suffered a concussion at the wrong time he’d be a regular player in the majors already. As it stands, he’s just resumed baseball activities within the last week. That gives him a shot at rejoining the Yankees in September.

If he can show the organization he’s healthy, he will immediately take Shane Robinson’s place on the roster. The team could really benefit from adding another major league hitter to the outfield. Frazier might face a race against time to get healthy, but everyone on the Yankees will be pulling for him to get over the hump.

1. Justus Sheffield

Sheffield is without a doubt, the most tantalizing prospect on this list. His command isn’t where the organization wants it, but his stuff is electric. Giving him meaningful innings down the stretch should be a huge priority for Brian Cashman and company.

The fact that the team has already shifted him to the bullpen in AAA is a clear indication he’s coming to the Bronx soon. When he arrives, he’ll give Boone another left hander to call on in relief. If he pitches well, he too might sneak onto the playoff roster. Many inside the Yankees organization will be hoping to see him flash enough ability to work his way into the team’s starting rotation in 2019.
