6. Nick Bosa, EDGE, Ohio State

With the Ohio State Buckeyes starting out the year with a dominant victory over Oregon State, defensive end Nick Bosa was the heart of the team on that side of the ball and filled up the stat sheet with two sacks, four tackles and his first touchdown of his college career as he picked up a fumble in the end zone for six points. His encore performance against Rutgers, however, was almost just as impressive.

On Saturday, Bosa came up with just one sack, but finished the day with three tackles for loss and five solo tackles. He was a menace that was in the Scarlet Knights backfield seemingly on every single snap. As always, it’s rare for a defensive player to be in the running for the Heisman Trophy. But for a guy to do it, they have to play like Bosa has through two weeks.

5. Jordan Ta’amu, QB, Ole Miss

Perhaps a theme of the early-season 2018 Heisman Trophy race should be “quarterbacks that are coming out of nowhere” or something along those lines, because we have another one in that ilk. Last week. Jordan Ta’amu and the Ole Miss Rebels poured 47 points on Texas Tech in a win with the quarterback throwing for 336 yards and two touchdowns. In a matchup with Southern Illinois this week, he had more to show.

Ta’amu finished Week 2 with 448 yards passing on 23-of-33 passing and with five tosses finding their way into the end zone. Even better, he’s kept the turnover bug away to this point with no interceptions on the year. There’s no doubt he has an advantage with one of the best receiving corps in the country. But if he can keep producing with them, he’s impossible to overlook.
