Point Guard

Starter: Dennis Smith Jr.

Depth:  J.J. Barea, Jalen Brunson

The Mavericks selected Dennis Smith Jr. with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, after a stellar season at NC State. Smith was immediately given the reins to run the teams offense during his rookie season, so growing pains were certainly going to be apart of the process. Smith flashed his athletic prowess at times and showed the ability to contribute across the board. There’s a lot to like about his game, but his efficiency must improve. Smith shot below 40 percent from the field, 31 percent from the 3-point line, and 69 percent from the free throw line. Still only 20 years old, Smith will continue to elevate his game each season and has a chance to be a star in this league.

Playing behind Smith Jr. this season will be savvy veteran J.J. Barea. The 34-year-old will once again be counted on to lead the second unit with his scoring and playmaking ability. Jalen Brunson was selected in the second round this past NBA draft, after a standout career at Villanova. Brunson has a chance to crack the rotation at some point, and he has the ability to play both guard positions.
