4. Melky Cabrera

It’s been almost a decade since Cabrera donned pinstripes, but he’s got a chance to return to the Bronx. He won’t be one of the team’s high priorities, but they could do a lot worse than bringing Cabrera into the fold as the team’s fourth outfielder.

The Yankees will certainly consider bringing Brett Gardner and Andrew McCutchen back, but both of those guys could get expensive. It’s possible the team might select to spend their money elsewhere. That would require signing a cheap outfielder who can play multiple positions.

Cabrera should fit that definition. He isn’t going to blow anyone away with his production, but he did manage to slash .280/.335/.420 in 250 at bats for the Indians in 2018. There’s definitely value in having a reserve who can give you replacement level production.

The only real question here is whether or not there’s bad blood between Cabrera and the organization. He didn’t leave New York on the best of terms. If there aren’t any big personal issues, bringing Cabrera back into the fold could be a clever move by the Yankees this winter.
